the old man and the sea is one of hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. it played a great part in his winning the pulizer prize in 1953 and the 1954 novel prize for literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. besides the old man and the sea, i have read some of his other works, such as the sun also rises, a farewell to arms and the snow of kilimanijaro. but the old man and the sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

i first read this book when i was in my fifteens. and now i remember it just as well as if i had read it yesterday.

pride and prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.

my first impression of this story was from screen.

it's long long ago, maybe before i can read english books. i don't remember which movie edition i had seen. but i was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. i was very favor of a section of music in its balls. it's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. regarding to the characters, i liked elizabeth, the heroine, though i didn't think she's beautiful. but she's smart. however, i didn't pay much attention to the plot. i thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. by now, i haven't read the whole story in english or its chinese version, either. i owe it to my prejudice.

in fact, i didn't understand the story at that time. i didn't know why it called pride and prejudice. of course someone was pride, but i didn't find where' s the prejudice. i thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. i considered prejudice would be very disgusting. but to the movie everthing was ok in my minds, except its length. now, i think i have understood more about it. i'm a prejudiced person so i can't find where's wrong. i merely like to do the things i like. everytime i meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

"its like a flower. if you fall in love with a flower growing on a star, then at night you feel sweet and happy when you look at the sky, and all the stars are like flowers."

the first time i read the little prince, in high school, was immediately attracted by his fresh writing style and the simple world. six years later, at the moment, read the "little prince", can not help but again and again to tears, and palpitation for princes mind be sad, moved by his pure and persistent love, for his innocence and mourning gradually to disappear. as the author of st. erik marcus paley said in the preface, he put the fairy tale "to leon? wirth, when he was a boy"

i didnt know this book was very famous in the west. it was a book that my adult and children liked to read. no wonder my mother would give it to me. i read it later. the little prince lived on a planet that was very small, and watered every day his roses. then the little prince traveled away from the planet and saw a lot of strange monsters on the planet until he came to earth and saw a pilot who had broken a plane in the desert. the little prince had a deep friendship with the pilot, but he missed his roses very much. in order to leave the earth, the little prince was bitten by a venomous snake, and then the pilot never saw him again.

at the beginning of the book, the irony of the unimaginative people, "these adults never actively understand anything; and for our children, always explain to them again and again......" "so i wouldnt talk to him about pythons, primeval forests, or stars. i only talk about things they can understand, such as bridge, golf, politics, ties, etc.. in this way, this person will be very happy, one met a reasonable and considerate person." and the children said to adults, "i saw a beautiful house, which was made of rose bricks, a window with a geranium, and a pigeon on the roof."." they have to be able to imagine what the house looks like, and you have to say, "i saw a house worth twenty thousand dollars."." they have to say, "that house is sure to be beautiful." saint exupery is perhaps in adults alone, then through the little princes eyes to find adults much ado about nothing, to share the wealth, money and power in order to forget the knowledge of the true value of his life really need to lose their most valuable innocence and innocence, lost their imagination and beauty.

from the little princes words, we can see that everything has its surface and authenticity. in many cases, we only see the superficial things, but ignore the inherent benefits. the little prince remembered the foxs words: "only the mind can see the essence of things; what is really important is invisible to the naked eye."". so he said, "just because there is a flower that we cant see, the stars look so beautiful."." "the desert is beautiful, because somewhere in the desert there is a well hidden."." ah, the little princes heart is very rich. a lot of things are mysterious because we cant see them with our naked eyes. in fact, these are so simple, just need a heart full of love.

in little women, you will meet the march sisters, meg, jo, beth & amy who live with their mother, marmee, and their maid hannah, during the civil war. the first half of the novel takes place while their father is away, serving in the war. each sister has a distinct personality, a reader, an artist, a musician, the quiet one. you will get to know this family in touching little stories of their daily life. each chapter seems to set up a moral lesson for the reader to learn. we also meet a wonderful set of neighbors, mr. laurence and his nephew "laurie" who quickly find a place as part of the march family.

the second half of the novel, focuses on the girls as they leave their childhood and begin their journey into adult life. lessons of friendship, family, and love are covered as we join the characters through the ups and downs of life, good times and bad. it seems that louisa may alcott used her own family as the basis for the stories in little women, basing the character jo on herself. it is amazing how though the book was written in the late 1800s, so many things about humans remain the same. the foundations of life that are important in friendships, family & love dont change through time, as alcott has shared with us. this is a book that young and old can read and appreciate.

the scarlet letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if american puritan society. the basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. the female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “a” on her dress at all times. it concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. its not simply a love story or a story of sin. the scarlet letter by nathaniel hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.

the story happened in boston about 200 years ago. it narrates love affairs between three persons. the punished woman. hester prynne and his husband. who called himself roger chillingworth . he is an old misshapen man and a doctor. hester does not love him at all. another man is a young minister, dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. hester and dimmesdale love each other. but their love is forbidden in that time . it is sinful. due to this, hester is punished by society with a letter a on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame.

in this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter a. hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. she is always with a mind of courage. she has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. shame! hopelessness! loneliness! hester has to wear the letter a day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.

when a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. if she be all tenderness, she will die. if she survive, the tenderness will leave her .hesters charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. the letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. the townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “able”.

but arthur dimmesdale, his sin against hester and pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife.
